view, katrina, you saw it, sandy give some impetus to dealing with climate change. i said, in new york, we will pay for climate change one way or another. we can pay for it after each natural disaster -- in new york, we have had three or 4100-year disasters -- or four 100-year disasters. irene, sandy. it will give some impetus to deal with climate change. even if we cannot reach compromise on that, there are lots of things that we can reach compromise on and that would be on the agenda. the fourth thing i put on the agenda, i talked about earlier in reference to your question. maybe we can get some real financial reform. republicans are beginning to rethink super pacs. they have not produced the positive results they hope for and they have produced negative results that they did not expect. >> if a deal is reached before the end of the year, does that remove the need for tax reform, more comprehensive tax reform next year? >> my view is that corporate tax reform should be treated separately. why? to make corporate tax reform work, you should not have revenue increases. you are putting

saw superstorm san joaquin smash into -- sandy smash into new jersey and new york with devastating results. loss of life, incredible loss of property, both public and private, and a very, very big cleanup bill. joining me in a little while will be some of our representatives from the state of new york. and they'll talk about that in detail. but before sandy ever hit the coast there was a need here in america to protect americans from storms and floods. we know what happens when the protection wasn't there. devastating results. today in the news in california, northern california , there is on the headlines a series of storms coming into northern california, into my district, into where my home is, and the word is, get ready for serious flooding. i mean, this is very early in the season. although californians with any memory at all will know that there are a series of infamous christmas floods in northern california. now, this is really a thanksgiving flood potential. but nonetheless it's there. and i will tell you clearly that the sacramento region, which is the second most risky r

the need for infrastructure in the northeast -- we are still reeling from the affects of sandy. the pleas of governors like malloy, cuomo, and christie, all are calling for us to focus on infrastructure. it is not only needed in a devastated northeast but clearly across this nation. one only has to read about the situation of roads and bridges to understand the importance of infrastructure and investment. clearly, people need to go back to work. that is something positive that we all agree on that can be done and should be done. but as we noticed today, there are no votes on the united states congress and the house of representatives today. we also agree, and emphasize this again, as did gene sperling -- everyone, and we mean everyone, should get $250,000 in tax breaks. everyone -- and so that means that even billionaires get that first $250,000. and everyone is in agreement -- the republicans do not want to see the middle class go without this tax cut. so where we disagree, let us push that off. where we agree, let's embrace. further, we discussed again the long term effects of our defic

like super storm sandy is a storm we have never seen before. it is due to industrial pollution from burning fossil fuels such as petroleum. some might question is this. how much responsibility does the petroleum industry willing to take for superstar sandy and other climate disasters that are looming on the horizon? how do you justify using billions of years of energy accumulation through your own individual wealth? thank you very much. guest: thank you for the question. the oil and natural gas industry are leaders in alternative forms of energy. we take our responsibility very seriously. we have invested more than the federal government in these different forms of energy over the past 10 years. we take second seat to nobody for energy future. we understand our role and are looking always for new energy forms. we have a vast diversity of energy that we produce. climate has been a discussion in the united states for the past decade or so. carbon emissions right now are at 1992 levels. the economy has slowed down and we need to get people back to work and to get the economy recovered.

. remember some other republican narrative is going to be sandy is what made a difference. why? because you saw this enormous public embrace of the idea of bipartisanship at a time of great stress in the country. the bromance between obama and chris christie was kind of like a cross between "i spy" and laurel and hardy. you have got that, and you had run the talking about how i will reach out, i will find common ground. obama calls in and says we need a common ground. i need you to be my emissary to congressional republicans and get them to go along with the simpson-bowles grand bargain. at the same time, while congressional republicans are not wanting to support governor romney, and remember when paul ryan after the 2010 elections, he was an icon for them, came back to the freshmen and said we cannot do the budget cuts we promised you right now. they threw him out of the room. they are not to be eager to do that. you can gain significant leverage by moving in that direction, and it would not surprise me that obama has a couple of cards up his sleeve to turn the bully pulpit into a more pot
